by surrealisticpill

freenode FAQs http://freenode.net/faq.shtml
official help channel: #freenode

------
In order to use IRC, you need an IRC client. If you don't want to download and install a program, use the java website. If you download an IRC client, it will offer advantages like automatically saving chat logs and customization options.

web-based java site:

http://java.freenode.net/

IRC clients:

http://www.mirc.com/get.html
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16

for Mac:

http://www.snak.com/

when using the IRC clients, you will need to connect to the server irc.freenode.net
-----

Basic Commands:

to change your nickname:
/nick

to register your nickname:
/msg nickserv register read this for more detail: http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#nicksetup

to sign in with your user name (after it's been registered):
/msg nickserv identify

to join a chatroom (channel):
/join #

to kill a ghost (if you get disconnected and it says your registered nick is in use)
/msg nickserv ghost

*when you type these commands, omit the < > and replace them with your info.

**if you are interested in cloaking your nick (this will make your IP invisible), properly set up your nick following the instructions here http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#nicksetup After you have done that, join #freenode and ask in the chat if there are any staff members available who can help you with a cloak.
